The M&M Meat Shops Concept

Incorporated in 1980, M&M Meat Shops Ltd. was established to answer the public's growing demand for high quality meat and specialty food items at reasonable prices. Today M&M Meat Shops is Canada's largest specialty frozen food chain and is an economical and friendly alternative to conventional grocery store shopping. All M&M Meat Shops stores are franchised operations, with the exception of four corporate training stores.

M&M Meat Shops' Head Office is based in Kitchener, Ontario, with regional offices in Calgary, Alberta and Pierrefonds, Quebec.


The M&M Meat Shops Product

M&M Meat Shops uses only the finest products from well-established, reputable suppliers who can guarantee both consistency and quality. Our stores carry a wide variety of over 350 products including beef, pork, poultry, seafood, cheese, hors d'oeuvres, vegetables, desserts and many specialty products. Items such as Bacon Wrapped Filets Mignons, New York Striploin Steaks, Veal Parmigiana, Chicken Swiss, Beef Wellington, Garlic Shrimp, Boneless Pork Loin Chops and New York Style Cream Cheesecakes are just a few of the many items normally stocked.

All product testing and purchasing are coordinated through Head Office. Our experienced buyers are in constant contact with the best purveyors and food processors throughout North America. The Purchasing team selects and buys for all stores, thus making quick, sizable purchases at the best possible prices. The majority of our suppliers offer us special rates on products purchased.

The M&M Meat Shops' product line is developed and maintained under a private, trademark label. We strive to create a diverse product line that caters to a variety of lifestyles, including homemakers, senior citizens, professionals and trades persons. We offer our customers nothing less than the finest in quality, cleanliness and unparalleled customer service.


Product Quality Assurance

All of our products and supplier facilities go through rigorous food safety and quality evaluations before they are approved by the Technical Services department. This department includes highly qualified people with degrees in food science, microbiology or similar disciplines and who also have significant experience in the food industry. They keep up-to-date with government regulations and guidelines on food safety, labeling, nutrition and more.

All M&M Meat Shops’ meat and poultry supplier facilities are federally inspected and registered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. They operate under the internationally recognized HACCP system (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) to assure food safety.

All M&M Meat Shops products have detailed written specifications covering: production method, critical and process control points, nutrition information, ingredient and allergen information, standards for packaging, labeling, bar coding, traceability, distribution, finished product composition, storage and shelf life. All products carry full retail-level labeling, including cooking/preparation instructions, ingredient listings and nutrition information.

Ongoing evaluations and tests are performed on products, both in-house and by accredited outside laboratories. Laboratory tests include: chemical, microbiological, compositional and nutritional evaluations to ensure that all products comply with M&M Meat Shops’ specifications. As well, production facilities receive ongoing inspections to assure continual delivery of high quality products to our customers.

M&M Meat Shops’ stores offer a full satisfaction guarantee on all products, backed by fully qualified consumer affairs personnel that are trained to accommodate and handle product-related incidents, consumer inquiries, etc. Customer satisfaction is integral in continuing the growth of the M&M Meat Shops brand.


Marketing and Advertising

At M&M Meat Shops, we realize that in order to build customer loyalty and continually expand our customer base, we must consistently advertise to promote and strengthen our brand. The cornerstones of the M&M brand are:

Innovative promotions, advertising and consumer research are topics of daily conversation, with the key objective of increasing and retaining store traffic at M&M Meat Shops. All areas of advertising are considered to effectively create awareness that coming to M&M Meat Shops is the smart way to shop.


Royalties and Marketing Fund

Royalties are 3% of gross sales and are paid to Head Office on a monthly basis.

The marketing fund is also paid on a monthly basis at the rate of 2% of gross sales. This fund covers brand-based advertising and promotions. It is governed by the Marketing Council, which is made up of elected franchisees and Head Office representatives.


Choosing M&M Meat Shops Franchisees

At M&M Meat Shops, we strongly believe the success of our franchisees is based on our extensive franchisee selection process, our continuous training and our on-going support programs.

In choosing franchisees, preference will be given to applicants who:

appreciate the benefits of working on a team and within a proven operating system
demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills
are familiar with, and involved in the community where the store is located
actively work in and manage the store
have the funds to invest in the store, as well as the financial ability to survive the first year
while drawing only a nominal salary

In choosing franchisees, preference will be given to the:

interview(s) to determine if the potential for a good business relationship exists
review of corporate objectives and timing for a new store , OR
successful outcome of negotiations with the vendor franchisee for a refranchise opportunity

Because it is impossible to predict how long it will take for a new store to reach a sales level that produces sufficient income for the franchisee, preference will be given to franchisees who do not rely on the income from the store for living expenses. We consider an ideal situation to be one where one of the spouses/partners continues to maintain his/her job while the other works at the development of the business. When the store produces sufficient profits, both spouses could then become involved and leave other jobs behind.

M&M Meat Shops Select

As we continue to grow our number of standard stores, another phase of our expansion is through a new concept called M&M Meat Shops Select. In order to reach potential customers who may not have a store close to them, M&M Meat Shops Select is designed for communities with smaller populations. Select stores are smaller in size, carry a slightly smaller product line and have lower rent than standard size stores. With comparatively lower costs and therefore lower breakeven sales, M&M Meat Shops Select provides for a strong business opportunity. The estimated total investment is approximately $250,000 and includes approximately $11,350 in GST which is 100% refundable.


The Investment for a Standard New Store

M&M Meat Shops is a franchised operation that requires a total investment of approximately $346,000 for standard size new store. This amount excludes approximately $17,000 GST, which is 100% refundable.

M&M Meat Shops financially pre-qualifies candidates who can confirm that they have approximately one-half of the total investment price ($173,000) available in unencumbered (free and clear) cash. Although the total cost of the store may be available to an applicant by way of a bank loan, we are of the belief that only half of the cost of the store be borrowed so that the candidate does not enter the business with an unreasonable debt load. Experience has proven that unreasonable debt loads are detrimental to the success of the franchise.

If the unencumbered funds are to be borrowed against the applicants' equity in their home, the repayment of this mortgage must be supported by a sufficient outside source of income (i.e. one spouse/partner who is otherwise employed).

The $346,000 includes:

$35,000 franchisee fee
$50,000 (approximately) is for the initial inventory and cash on hand
$261,000 (approximately) is the capital required for equipment, construction, (Contingency and Construction
Management Fee) legal costs, accounting, Grand Opening advertising, and miscellaneous start-up items. This amount
can vary with each store depending on what improvements are provided by the landlord. Many new shopping centre
developers offer only a bare shell and it is up to the franchisee to put in the floor, ceiling, wiring, etc.

The investment further provides for:

the use of M&M Meat Shops' name, trademarks and reputation
benefits of our collective experience, business expertise and advice
design and layout of the new store
preparation of initial product inventory
marketing and advertising advice for initial store promotion
preparation of initial product inventory
extensive training to acquaint new franchisees with our product lines and concept, including administration
access to volume buying power and aggressive promotions

M&M Meat Shops strives to ensure the success of every franchise long before a franchise agreement is executed and a new store planned. Annual gross sales for established stores are averaging approximately $1 million per year. Projected operational expenses and sales can vary considerably with the management skills of a new franchisee, location and other variables. For these reasons, M&M Meat Shops does not guarantee that a new store will reach these annual sales. As part of our selection process, prospective franchisees will receive our Disclosure Document which includes several actual blind financial statements of stores in the chain at various sales levels.


Procedure and Timing to Open a New Store

Once a definite interest in the franchise is confirmed and the applicant is satisfied that he or she can meet the financial obligations, a Confidential Qualification Report is completed and forwarded to the appropriate office.

M&M Meat Shops determines an appropriate location and negotiates a lease. After the location has been finalized and a lease agreement executed, an estimate of the overall costs for construction, renovation and equipment is provided. Following this, monies sufficient to cover the franchise fee and agreed upon construction and equipment costs must be deposited with M&M Meat Shops. Subsequently, a standard Franchise Agreement is executed. M&M Meat Shops Construction Company, or its designated contractor, coordinates and supervises all aspects of construction from preparation of drawings to the completion of construction, as well as the ordering of all equipment.

While construction is in progress, it is the responsibility of the franchisee to hire staff to work in the store. We assist in providing management training and staff training to familiarize the franchisee with the store operations and items such as cost control, inventory control, purchasing, administration, management, product knowledge and sales training. This includes determining an appropriate initial product inventory prior to store opening.

Successful applicants are expected to complete an extensive three-week training program at one of our designated training centres. In conjunction with the training, M&M Meat Shops will provide experienced staff for the first few weeks to ensure the store is running smoothly, and to provide assistance in preparing the initial promotional advertising for the Grand Opening.

Operation of all our stores is monitored and appropriate back-up assistance is provided to continually improve service and performance.


Refranchise Opportunities

A refranchise opportunity is a chance to obtain an established business with known revenue and expenses. Existing stores refranchise for a variety of reasons: retirement, divorce, illness, etc. Refranchise opportunities can be more or less the cost of a new store depending on a variety of factors: asset or share purchase, sales history, required renovations, etc.

As with a new franchise opportunity, M&M Meat Shops financially pre-qualifies candidates who can confirm that they have approximately one-half of the negotiated purchase price available in unencumbered (free and clear) cash. For a refranchise opportunity, approximately another $60,000 must be added on to the purchase price to cover additional costs such as the transfer and training fees, inventory, legal fees etc. Please contact our Franchising department for financial requirements for specific refranchise opportunities.

The refranchise process takes from eight to twelve weeks from the time a purchase agreement is in place. This allows sufficient time for financing to be arranged and training to be completed.
